Michigan Pushes to Protect Medical Marijuana Dispensaries

By Chloé Harper Gold    Despite attempts to shut them down, Michigan medical marijuana dispensaries are safe. For now, anyway. In light of recent legislation regarding cannabis dispensaries in the state, lawyers are stepping in and stepping up to protect not only the businesses, but also the patients and caregivers who rely on them. And it’s not only lawyers who have their backs. State senators are also getting involved in the fight. What Is the Endocannabinoid System and What Is Its Role?

by Nick Jikomes Some of us consume cannabis for its mind-altering effects, while others seek symptom relief. Our endocannabinoid system does just that. But it isn’t there just to allow us to enjoy the effects of our favorite strain. It serves a vital purpose for our health and well-being because it regulates key aspects of our biology. So, what’s it doing, and how does it work? Homeostasis: Staying...

Cannabis Study: How THC Affects Learning and Memory at Different Ages

by Nick Jikomes “All diseases run into one, old age.” –Ralph Waldo Emerson   A recent study in mice sparked eye-catching headlines like, “Memory Loss From Old Age Could Be Reversed By Smoking Marijuana.” The idea is alluring, especially given the toll cognitive decline takes as we age: instead of leaving you dazed and confused, THC might actually help restore cognitive function in older individuals. While the study made interesting observations about how THC affects learning and memory in young vs. older mice, it didn’t involve smoking or cannabis consumption. What did the study find, how did it work, and...

CBD vs. THC: Why Is CBD Not Psychoactive?

by Bruce Barcott Why is THC psychoactive and CBD is not? How can one cannabinoid alter the mind so profoundly, and the other seemingly not at all?  When we’re talking about cannabis and psychoactivity, we’re dealing exclusively with CB1 receptors, which are concentrated in the brain and the central nervous system. The difference between CBD vs. THC comes down to a basic difference in how each one interacts with the cannabinoid 1 (CB1) receptor. THC binds well with CB1 cannabinoid receptors. CBD has low binding affinity for CB1 receptors. That’s where the two diverge. Think of it like an electrical plug...
