Cannabis & Bone Health

Osteoporosis – Medical Marijuana Research Overview

Findings: Effects of Cannabis on Osteoporosis

Studies have shown that cannabinoids and the endocannabinoid system play a key role in the regulation of bone metabolism6,11. A deficiency in CB1 cannabinoid receptors has been shown to be associated with accelerated age-dependent osteoporosis because it stimulates bone resorption and significantly reduces bone formation. Deficiencies in CB2 receptors have also been found to be associated with an enhanced bone turnover rate and thus osteoporosis1,4,5.

Research Finds How Cannabis Supports Bone Health

According to recent research, THC, CBD, and CBG can speed up bone healing, prevent diseases, slow down bone degeneration. Cannabis can help in arthritis pain control and osteoporosis. Patients experiment cannabis tinctures, balms, oils, yet no standard therapies are available.

The endocannabinoid system plays a role in growing, preserving and strengthening bones. By interacting with other biochemical networks in our body such as the immune system, CB1, and CB2 receptors are also active against bone diseases. Unfortunately, we just started to understand how this mechanism works, and no standard therapies are available yet. Despite this, many patients have chosen alternative or integrative therapies with cannabinoids to treat their bones conditions, just like ancient Indians and Chinese used to do since a thousand years.

Cannabis helps to heal bone fractures

TEL AVIV, Israel, July 16 (UPI) — A non-psychotropic component of marijuana, cannabinoid cannabidiol, or CBD, can help heal bone fractures and speed up the process, a study on rats with mid-femoral fractures indicates.

Researchers at Tel Aviv University had previously discovered cannabinoid receptors within human bodies stimulated bone formation and inhibited bone loss. This led them to investigate whether cannabis, or the compounds found within it, could help bones to heal.

“We found that CBD alone makes bones stronger during healing, enhancing the maturation of the collagenous matrix, which provides the basis for new mineralization of bone tissue,” Dr. Yankel Gabet, of the Bone Research Laboratory in the Department of Anatomy and Anthropology at Tel Aviv University, said in a press release. “After being treated with CBD, the healed bone will be harder to break in the future.”
